If you’re traveling to Alaska with a surprise proposal in mind, Juneau, Alaska should be at the top of the list. Especially for those with adventurous hearts! With its proximity to picturesque mountains, blue flowing glaciers, and abundant wildlife, Juneau is the total package. The best time to visit Juneau is late spring and summer when the days are warm, and the wildflowers bloom.  It is also the best time to do whale watching (though the whale statue is up year round)!

Planning the Surprise

The Plan

When Tyler reached out to me to plan his surprise proposal in Juneau, Alaska, he told me he used to come here as a kid and that he couldn’t think of a better place to propose. Tyler and Nikki were already planning a trip with his family and their best friends during the 4th of July, which was a perfect cover for his plan. However, only a select few knew what Tyler had up his sleeve!

Arriving on Location – Tahku the Whale

On the morning of the surprise proposal, I met Tyler and Nikki with their family and friends at Mayor Bill Overstreet park in front of the Tahku whale sculpture. Its infinity pool that seems to flow right into the bay and the bronze sculpture glittering in the morning sunlight was the perfect backdrop for Tyler to drop to one knee to propose to Nikki. And of course, she said YES! Right after Tyler proposed, the statue’s fountains turned on as if planned. Talk about perfect timing! As if the proposal in one of the most beautiful places wasn’t a big enough surprise, Tyler flew Nikki’s parents (who she hadn’t seen in years) to Juneau to celebrate with them.

The Engagement Session

After capturing some family and friend photos, we headed to a local beach that is only accessible during low tide, so planning for perfect timing was a must. We made our way onto the sandy beach on a path lined with wildflowers. The love that radiates off these two is magnetic! We ended the session amongst some Alaskan fireweed before the crowds of locals made their way to the area for the 4th of July fireworks. Independence day is a huge celebration here in Juneau!
