Dreamy Alaska Float Plane Wedding at Taku Glacier Lodge | Aubony and Matthew

A Taku Glacier Wedding Straight Out of an Alaskan Daydream

Okay, but have you ever flown to your actual wedding in a float plane? That’s exactly what Aubony and Matt did—and yes, it was every bit as dreamy as it sounds.

They skipped the stress, dialed up the adventure, and opted for something way more “them”: a peaceful, intentional, romantically scenic wedding day with just their closest family in one of the most epic lodge venues Alaska has to offer—Taku Glacier Lodge. It was intimate, full of meaning, and SO Alaska (float planes, glacier views, wild salmon—check, check, check).

From the jump, they knew they wanted something small, calm, and focused on the things that actually matter: their love, their family, and the gorgeous landscapes of Alaska.

So, on May 6th, with 14 guests flying in from all over (New York to Wyoming), they geared up for the most relaxed, beautiful wedding day. No chaos. Just them, an old cabin, a massive glacier, and a whole lot of love.

Tinder, Axes, and Pho — Meet Aubony + Matt

These two first crossed paths on Tinder (as most modern love stories go) and kicked off their first date with axe throwing followed by a bowl of pho—iconic. He was impressed by her brains and bold spirit. She was intrigued by his confidence (and his axe-throwing skills).

They met in college, and eventually landed in Juneau where Matt works as an aircraft mechanic for Wings Airways, the float plane company that flies to the Taku Glacier Lodge. While most would rather separate their jobs and their weddings, there is something special about the Taku Glacier Lodge — with its grand views, rich and unique history dating back to the 1920s, and a close-knit crew of seasonal staff who live in cozy cabins onsite and welcome guests like family. This makes the lodge feel like a beloved home in the wilderness and employees return every year for the summer season.

The First Look

That morning, Aubony got ready at their Airbnb with her mom and sister helping her with hair and makeup. No rush. No pressure. Just cozy, meaningful vibes. Meanwhile, Matt was off doing his thing—calm, collected, and ready to marry his favorite person.

They met for a first look at Cope Park—a quiet little spot in town surrounded by trees and streams. Just the two of them, sharing a breath before the adventure ahead. And then? They made their entrance down the docks ramp, hand-in-hand, with their families waiting below. Like their own version of walking down the aisle—and honestly? Way cooler.

Taking Flight

The crew loaded up into two Wings Airways float planes and lifted off into the clouds. Everyone put on their headphones, which played a From the air, you get an entirely new perspective on Juneau’s untamed beauty—glacial fjords, braided river valleys, and mountains so dramatic they look like something out of a painting.

And then came the glaciers—five of them branching from the Juneau Icefield; Norris Glacier, Hole-In-The-Wall Glacier, East Twin, West Twin, and finally the big daddy: Taku Glacier. From the sky, you see every deep-blue crevasse and jagged ice cliff in high definition. It’s breathtaking. It’s humbling. And it’s the kind of thing that reminds you how small we are.

It’s the coolest way to start a wedding day.

A Lawn Wedding, but make it Alaskan

Tucked beside the Taku River and only reachable by air, landing at the Taku Glacier Lodge feels like stepping into the past. Massive untouched wilderness surrounds you, and nearby you are welcomed into a cozy and rustic lodge made of logs that is over 100 years old.

Aubony’s Grandpa Bill officiated the wedding on the lodge lawn, surrounded by happy tears and soft laughter, with the glacier looming in the distance and the scent of woodsmoke from the firepit.

After the ceremony, the fam headed inside for lunch while we wandered the property for portraits. Of course we captured the epic Taku Glacier, but we also wandered down the mossy “sometimes a waterfall” trail and were lucky enough to see the waterfall.

Inside the lodge, the wood stove was glowing and everyone gathered for toasts, cake and a sweet first dance to The Last One by First Aid Kit.
