Skater’s Cabin Picnic Shelter sits on the southwest shore of Mendenhall Lake, opposite the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor’s Center. The stone cabin features a covered porch, picnic tables, a wood stove, and a spacious outdoor fire pit. While the cabin’s interior may lack natural light for photos, its surroundings make it a sought-after spot for elopements and intimate weddings. Despite its small beach area, it offers stunning vistas of Mendenhall Lake and the glacier.

Nugget Falls

Nugget Falls is a towering waterfall cascading approximately 377 feet into Mendenhall Lake, fueled by meltwater from the Nugget Glacier. Accessible via a branch trail halfway along the route to Mendenhall Glacier Lookout Point, the easy trail winds along the eastern shore of Mendenhall Lake, through mossy rainforest, to the base of the majestic falls. The sand flat at the waterfall’s foot offers ample space for exploration, with views of Mendenhall Glacier and drifting icebergs on the lake. Note that the trail can be flooded at times and may become crowded with locals during sunny days and tourists when multiple cruise ships dock in town.

Mendenhall Glacier

Getting married on top of a glacier is about as adventurous and non-traditional as it gets when it comes to your wedding day. It is hard to explain just how small you feel on top of a massive and ancient glacier; It’s truly otherworldly. If you’re interested in eloping on the Mendenhall Glacier, there are 3 helicopter companies that can fly you there: Temsco, Coastal, and NorthStar. The pilots are always searching for landing spots with the coveted blue ice pools. but due to weather and the fact that the glacier is constantly moving and changing, for safety reasons it’s not always possible to land near them.

Herbert Glacier

Herbert Glacier, accessible by helicopter from Juneau, offers stunning views that rival its more famous counterpart, Mendenhall Glacier. While Herbert Glacier is a bit farther out, resulting in a pricier but more scenic flight, its secluded location sets it apart. Unlike Mendenhall, which sees constant tour traffic, Herbert Glacier offers a quieter, more intimate experience for elopements without the distraction of helicopters or tour groups.

Summit Lake in Hatcher Pass is a dreamy spot for couples to tie the knot. Just take a scenic drive along Hatcher Pass Road from Palmer or Wasilla to get there. As you wind up the mountain, you’ll be treated to stunning views of meadows, peaks, and waterfalls. Once at Summit Lake, you’ll find crystal-clear emerald waters and breathtaking mountain backdrops, perfect for your ceremony. You may even spot paragliders in the skies above you.

Eklutna Lake

Eklutna Lake is a serene and picturesque destination nestled in Chugach State Park, just about 40 miles northeast of Anchorage, Alaska. This stunning glacier-fed lake stretches for around 7 miles and is surrounded by lush forests and towering mountains, creating a peaceful and romantic backdrop for an elopement. The calm, clear waters offer a lovely setting for exchanging vows by the shoreline, and the natural beauty of the area makes for breathtaking photos. To get to Eklutna Lake, simply take the scenic Glenn Highway north from Anchorage, then follow signs to the lake once you reach the Eklutna Lake exit. There’s plenty of parking and access to the lakeside for a beautiful and intimate ceremony. Plus, after the ceremony, you can enjoy a hike, bike ride, or paddle on the lake to celebrate your elopement.

Knik River

The Knik River is a picturesque river flowing through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley in Alaska, known for its stunning views and tranquil surroundings. Eloping near the Knik River offers a serene and romantic setting, whether you choose a spot along the riverbank or on one of the nearby trails. The river’s glacial waters have a beautiful turquoise hue, and the surrounding landscapes include lush forests and majestic mountains, providing a dreamy backdrop for exchanging vows. To get to the Knik River, take the Old Glenn Highway from Anchorage, then follow signs towards Palmer. You’ll find several access points and viewpoints along the river, offering plenty of options for a memorable and intimate elopement ceremony.
